A Solemn Event Politicized

August 8, was the deadliest day in the ten year long Iraq-Afghan conflict. America lost 31 of its bravest soldiers in Afghanistan. A Chinook helicopter ladened with a Navy Seal team rushed to a mountain to help an Army Ranger unit under fire from insurgents. The chopper never made its destination. It was shot down by what is believed to be a rocket propelled grenade(RPG). All on board parishes either by the attack or by the ensuing crash.

When even one of our brave soldiers looses his life or limb in his countries service it is horrid, but to loose 31 at once is hard to handle. Whether you believe the U.S. is acting in our country's best interests are not, you have to concede that the loss of life of a soldier doing his job is certainly mournful.

The process of delivering the remains of soldiers killed in action is called the “dignified transfer ceremony”. Before the solemn transfer is made to the family a vote is taken by all the families involved. The question that is asked is if they have issues with media coverage. The military is right in it asking if this all so somber event is to be covered by media outlets. In this instant the over whelming vote was to not have media present. That covers all attendees as well. No photography, print, or online presents of any kind was to be permitted.

On this doleful day at Dover Air Force Base, the Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, Under Secretary of Defense Michael Vickers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead, Secretary of the Army John McHugh and Vice Chief of Staff of the Army Gen. Peter Chiarelli, Undersecretary of the Air Force Erin Conaton and Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove,, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Rick West and Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force James Roy, military honor guard units and staff were all in attendance. President Obama made an impromptu appearance as well.

Most of these high ranking officials travel with their personal photographers but were told, and adhered to, the family wishes that no media or photography was to be allowed. All but President Obama that is. He knew ahead of time of the families wishes and disregarded them for political reasons. He allowed his personal photographer access to the entire ceremony. Immediately after the ceremony the photos were circulated to the news media outlets. Later when questioned about the photographer's presence a spokesperson for his administration said that the photographer did not take any phtos of the caskets or families so they in fact had adhered to the privacy of the families. Mr. President....NO MEANS NO!!.

Fortunately most outlets passed on the photos, not due to the families wishes not being followed, but rather the fact that they were not allowed in to take there own photos.

The shear audacity of the President completely disregarding the wishes of KIA soldiers' families is unfathomable. And to ignore those wishes for obvious political gain is revolting. The Commander in Chief, the highest ranking military official in the U.S. should at any cost observe the wishes of fallen soldiers no matter what they are. I don't care if the family wanted jelly donuts at the ceremony, then get the damn donuts!!

This just another example of the lack of leadership and the “fish out of water” syndrome that Mr. Obama features. He, as well as his administration, think they are above protocol and humanity for that matter.

So Mr. Obama, the click, click, click you were hearing wasn't your personal photographer's camera going off, it was just more nails being hammered into your political coffin.

Whether or not you believe this or not, the issue is he campaigned on the platform that he wouldn't be like "Washington". He was an "outsider". He wasn't corrupted by PAC money and special interests. No inside deals and payback would be tolerated. Remember.....he was going to "CHANGE" this? The only change we got is the penitence we receive from our wages. The truth is he is just another politician. American's believe the hype and we got burned.

Druid Dude, just for the record, there is no Seal Team 6. They were disbanned back in the early 80's. The group that handle the OBL mission were DEVGU unit members. DEVGRU is the U.S. Naval Special Warfare Development Group. And no, there are no Seal teams 1 thru 5. Seal Team 6 was the name given to the group when Dick Marchenko was handed the task of setting up an elite group of existing Seals. He named it that to throw off the Soviets.

I know conspiracy theorists out there are all over the mission that unfortunately failed on August 8th. They want to know why those members would have been flying in a CH-47 Chinook instead of there UH60 Blackhawks. Fact is they had just returned from a fire fight and the code went out about the Rangers being pinned so the team hopped the first ACFT available. Time was of the essence.

Also the fact is whether they flew in a Navy Seal UH60, a or an MH-47G Night Stalker, or the CH-47(which by the way ANG doesn't fly as reported) they were on wouldn't have matter. An RPG took it down and none of this aircraft could have sustained a hit and kept flying. Another fact is one Chinook can replace up to five UH-60s in this role as an air assault transport.

Sorry conspiracy buffs....no conspiracy just perils of war.

What is even more shameful is that Biden outed the Seals after the supposed "assassination" of OBL. Then The "Won" went to Ft Campbell, Kentucky to meet with them, again divulging their identities and making Ft Campbell a target.

They are not to be trusted with classified info.

Also, since the remains were incinerated, that points to one of the Afghanis on board with tem being a suicide bomber, and that the helo was not shot down.

Our President is a joke. He has no business on the White House whatsoever.

As was written, I am not debating the rational or reasons for this or any other war. I am simply stating that KIA soldiers and their families deserve respect in such a mournful setting. The President of the United States chose political gain over a solemn tribute. That in and of itself is appauling behavior. Whether he be Democrat, Republican, or any other affiliation, he was wrong for including his photographer at this time and this place. He flew in to Dover in Helo 1 followed by no less than 3 other choppers filled with media. This outing for him was political from the onset. Again, no matter your view of these and any other war, please give the families their privacy.

My heart felt condolences to the family of your friend and student. I hope the media respects your and the fallen soldier's family's privacy as well.

Too many deaths were imminent when Bush stared the post 9/11 wars. There started a massive loss of lives on both sides, much more than the twin towers brought to us. I don't want to get too much into the politics of it, but my heart is broken, as it has hit home. One of my former high school students from a local town was one of those 31. It may be cliche to say how great someone was after they die young or tragically, but John Brown was. He was positive, engaging, and kind to all who knew him. Even his classmates in high school who may not have been in the "in-crowd" recognized that. All I know is that I wish war was not an option as too many great people die, both on our "side" and the other. As for me, I am going to a memorial service next Tuesday to join former students in grieving for a wonderful young man.

I hate to hear things like this although they need to be brought to our attention, its ridiculous we are in a war we started just for money, and people are dying for someones profits, its sad.
